Carlton Gallegos is from Santa Ana Pueblo. He taught himself how to make wheat straw applique crosses because, at that time, there were two very old people from his pueblo who knew how to do it, and Carlton did not want the craft to be lost when they died. One of those elderly people was Porfirio Montoya.Susan’s mother bought a Porfirio Montoya cross in 1962. Susan was given that cross last year. She asked Carlton to copy the Porfirio cross. This cross is the copy. This very special cross is eight inches tall (20cm.).
