Angelo LeRouge is part of a distinguished New Mexican family of folk artists. His grandfather was Ben Ortega, who lived in Tesuque village (not Tesuque Pueblo) just north of Santa Fe. Ben Ortega was famous for his wooden Saint Francis figures. Angelo is beginning his own career as a folk artist. He has studied his grandfather’s work and is now making Saint Francis figures like Ben’s. A wooden bird sits on each arm, and a strong cord goes around the waist of the saint and is twisted down to his bare feet. Angelo makes the Saint Francis figures in several sizes. This one is eleven inches (28 cm.).
