There is a small private chapel on the top of a hill by Cerro Gordo, a dirt street in Santa Fe that runs parallel to Canyon Road, but on the opposite side of the canyon. It was built with stone in the 1930s by a man who was in his 70s at the time, and would not let anyone help him. He was the grandfather of Ramon Lopez, a famous, prize-winning Santa Fe santero. On Christmas Eve, the neighbors by this chapel put out live candles inside paper bags around this small chapel. A photo of this special Christmas Eve display is in Susan’s book, Christmas in Santa Fe. This southwest advent calendar teaches even more about the New Mexican traditions of santos and santeros. The name Santa Fe translates into Holy Faith in English. This was created by a local Santa Fe artist, Mary Ray Cate.
