This ornament is a miniature version of the traditional leather moccasins worn by the Navajo. They are rust-colored with white soles and a thicker leather that rises around the foot. Often these are closed with a silver button at the ankle. All these details are present in this miniature pair of moccasins by Leo Benally from the Monument Valley area of the Navajo Reservation. From heel to toe, each moccasin is two and a quarter inches (6 cm.).
