Mary Ellen Toya is from Jemez Pueblo. She creates using her pueblo’s native clay. Her pottery nativity is unusual because it has a smiling camel with two humps. Mary is wearing a squash blossom necklace and her dress has nicely painted trim. Joseph has a folded blanket over his shoulder, the sign of a formal occasion. The baby remains in his bed and is not removable. There are five animals in the scene. The tallest figure is almost three and a half inches tall (9 cm.).
