Marie Chinana is a potter from Jemez Pueblo. Usually she makes pottery ornaments, once in a while she makes a nativity. She made this darling, affordable nativity with a wall background. Her clay is dug from the earth, the traditional Jemez clay. The wall looks like it is made of adobe bricks and it has a pottery star. Mary is dressed in a shawl and Joseph wears a folded blanket over his shoulder, indicating that this is a formal occasion. Both Mary and Joseph wear painted jewelry. Baby Jesus is covered with a blanket that has a nice kiva step border. There are two lambs and a cow and a donkey. The wall is three and a half inches tall at the highest point (9 cm.).
