Linda Lucero Fragua is a prize winning potter from Jemez Pueblo, south and west of Santa Fe. Her nativity is made of native clay and painted with different colors of clay slips. The figures are formed by hand. Joseph has a folded blanket over his shoulder, a sign of a formal occasion in the pueblos. Mary has a shawl over her head. The baby Jesus lies under a gorgeous pottery blanket painted with traditional pueblo pottery designs. The scene is set in front of a pueblo corner fireplace. From the vigas hang a colorful pueblo drum and a pair of moccasins. The cow is what we call a “Picasso cow”, and a little sheep completes the charming scene. This is by one of the best nativity makers of Jemez Pueblo. The wall is about six inches and a half inches tall (16 cm.).
