JEMEZ PUEBLO NATIVITY WITH ANGEL BY CHRISLYN FRAGUA

Chrislyn Fragua is a potter from Jemez Pueblo. Her mother is Linda Lucero Fragua, who has taught Chrislyn to make nativities. Like her mother, Chrislyn does not use paint purchased in a store. Instead she uses clay slips she and her mother have dug from the earth. Mary and Joseph kneel. The wise men are wrapped in pottery blankets and they hold pueblo gifts, a vase, a canteen, and a dish. The baby is snugly wrapped in his bed, while an angel in a pueblo dress sings in the back. Two animals complete the scene. We call one of them “the Picasso cow”. The tallest piece is six inches tall (15 cm.).
