Flights into Egypt are another part of the story of the nativity, but they are seen less often. Linda Lucero Fragua made this Flight into Egypt of native clay painted with different colors of clay slips. The figures are formed by hand. Joseph is wrapped in a blanket and carries a shepherds crook. Mary rides on the donkey (or perhaps we should say burro) holding the baby Jesus. The grey donkey is sweet and patient, and his long ears hang below his neck. This is a very distinctive Flight by one of the best nativity makers of Jemez Pueblo. The tallest figure is seven inches tall (18 cm.).
