Chrislyn Fragua comes from a talented family at Jemez Pueblo. Jemez is more than an hour’s drive from Santa Fe, to the southwest. Like most Jemez potters, Chrislyn makes her figures from clay she digs from the earth. Then the clay is cleaned and kneaded, and the figures are formed. Joseph is wrapped in a blanket and holds a staff. Mary wears a manta, the traditional pueblo dress, and a shawl with pueblo design elements painted on it. Baby Jesus is wrapped in a pottery blanket. The tallest figure is seven inches (17 cm.).
