Sabinita Lopez OrtizSabinita Lopez Ortiz is a famous wood carver from the northern New Mexico village of Cordova, which is nestled in a valley on the High Road to Taos. She was raised by her uncle, George Lopez, the first wood carver from Cordova able to support himself with his carving. Sabinita developed her own instantly recognizable stye. She has now been carving for decades and her work is in the Smithsonian Museum in Washington D.C. This distinctive nativity by Sabinita is of cottonwood with decorative elements of red cedar. Mary has a halo of spikes of red cedar. Three oversized leaves of red cedar provide a background for the scene. Red cedar wood chips line the baby’s bed and he is wrapped in soft leather. The donkey wears a soft leather blanket. All the figures are set on a wooden base with a decoratively carved edge. It is seven and a half inches tall at the highest point and 9 inches wide at the base (19 cm. x 23 cm.).
