Sud-Tirolo (South Tyrol) is a special region of northern Italy, close to Austria. This region has a very long tradition of wood carving. This special carved wooden nativity comes from Sud-Tirolo, using a technique that combines expert handwork and mechanical innovation. The original design was carved by hand of maple wood that has been dried for decades. A mold of the original carving was made, and a cast metal copy is then reproduced with the aid of a special machine. The results are finished by hand in the PEMA factory in St. Ulrich in the beautiful Val Gardena. Susan visited the factory after the 2016 World Congress of Nativity Collectors in Bergamo, Italy. The style is European. The Baby Jesus is a separately carved piece and come out of his bed. Mary and Joseph look on with devotion, and there are three sheep to complete the scene. All these pieces are set into a “lantern” style stable. It is a very distinctive nativity that is much nicer than less expensive sets made with cast pieces. It will become a beloved family heirloom. This nativity measures 10″ x 9″ x 11″ inches (25 x 22 x 28 cm.).
