The presence of a palm tree in a nativity scene always sets the action in Bethlehem. Europeans call nativities with palm trees “oriental”. This pewter palm tree is part of a large wooden eighteenth century nativity in a Baroque church in Diessen am Ammersee, south of Munich. A German company in the same town, Wilhelm Schweitzer, was inspired to make made pewter molds based on this historic nativity. Susan purchased extra pewter palm trees because they are wonderful accessory to other nativity scenes, depending on the size of the figures. It adds a distinctive touch of life. Each tree comes in a lovely box with layers of foam to protect it. It is six and a half inches tall (16 cm.).
