Ecuador is a South American country that makes many different styles of nativities. Very fine carvers live there. This one is carved of a dark wood called nogal, which means walnut. The carving is of an expert level, particularly in the faces. Mary and Joseph kneel, and the peasants stand with their gifts. The baby was carved separately but is glued in place. All the costumes are those of Ecuadorian peasants. The tallest figure is almost seven and a half inches tall (19 cm.).
