This unique nativity scene is hand made in Kyrgyzstan and includes 11 individually crafted figures; Mary, Joseph, a Shepherd with sheep in hands, three Wiseman, an angel, baby Jesus, ox, donkey, sheep and star to create a magical Christmas scene. The set comes with a yurt, the traditional Kyrgyz portable house, and all figures fit inside for easy storage.
These whimsical figures are handmade in Kyrgyzstan out of felt, a thick fabric produced by application of heat, water, and pressure for the meshing together of wool fibers. The women dye the felt pieces and then cut, and shape them into animals and dolls. Their specialty is making the faces which are embellished with silk and wool embroidery and beads. She uses yarn hair to make the hair. The intricately dressed figures represent daily life and customs in rural Kyrgyzstan.
Yurt measures just over five inches high and over eight inches wide and the tallest figure is five and a half inches (14 cm.).
