The country of Ecuador was fabulously rich in religious art during its time as a colony of Spain. The styles used in Ecuador were the same styles popular in Spain. This rich legacy is reproduced in this lovely nativity by Edmundo. The robes of Mary and Joseph are richly painted, with gold elements on the robes imitating rich fabrics. Each figure has glass eyes. Mary and Joseph both have delicate flat metal halos attached to the back of their heads. Their expressive hands are carved separately of wood, and are inserted into their sleeves and held in place with a bit of wax. The elegance of this nativity adds a solemn dignity to the occasion. Mary is about nine inches tall (22 cm.).
