Oaxaca is a special region of Mexico, famous for folk art. La Unica is a village in the state of Oaxaca. This special carved wooden nativity was made in La Unica, either by Placito or Maximino of the Santiago family. There are sixteen figures in the set, including Wise Men bearing gifts, peasants with burdens hanging from their shoulders, and several animals. Mary is holding a blanket for the baby. She can raise and lower her arms. The baby is a separately carved piece of wood that has been attached to the bed. A bit of paint is on the eyes of the animals, and on the body of the ox. The chicken is much larger than most chickens, but that is the nature of folk art. It has a genuine charm originating in Oaxaca. The tallest figure is six and a half inches tall (16 cm.).
