This colorful pottery nativity was made by hand in Ecuador. Ecuador had slaves from Africa at one time in the colonial days of its long history. When the African slaves were finally set free, many of them settled on the Pacific coast of Ecuador. In their new home, they created a distinctive culture, which is called “Afro-Pacifica”. The figures in this Afro-Pacifica nativity set are made of press-molded clay, which is fired and painted by hand. Most of the figures hold products of Ecuador, such as Panama hats (which have always been made in Ecuador, not Panama), flowers, bananas, pineapple, watermelon and fish. This set is colorful and distinctive. The tallest figure in this nativity is four and a half inches tall. (11 cm.)
