Louise Ortega

Louise is the youngest child in the large family of the late Ben Ortega of Tesuque, New Mexico. Ben was especially famous for his unpainted wooden figures of Saint Francis, the patron saint of Santa Fe. Louise was married to David Alvarez, another talented folk artist, and David and Louise made many pieces together. Since David’s death in 2010, Louise has continued to create driftwood angels and nativities. Older pieces were signed Louise Alvarez, but she now signs her work using her famous maiden name, Ortega. A wreath of Louise driftwood angels has been seen on the front door of Susan’s Christmas Shop for many years, inspiring customers to make their own wreaths.
