Carlton Gallegos

Carlton Gallegos is a Pueblo Indian from Santa Ana Pueblo. He makes wooden crosses with wheat straw applique. Long ago, there were only two makers of this style cross at his pueblo, so Carlton taught himself how to make wheat straw applique, so the craft would not be lost when they died. He makes crosses in several sizes. Because the wheat straw catches the light, it is sometimes called “poor man’s gold”.
